Family Service Guidance Center

The Family Service Guidance Center (FSGC) in Topeka, Kansas, delivers vital mental health services to nearly 10,000 children, teens and families annually, filling a critical gap left by regional psychiatric bed closures. To support growing service needs, FSGC engaged Circadia and Architect One to overhaul its interior environment, shifting away from cramped, institutional spaces toward a design that balances security with comfort. The goal was to improve supervision, privacy and therapeutic support while fostering a warm, healing atmosphere that feels more like home than a hospital.

The redesigned facility incorporates safety-focused materials, minimized blind spots and thoughtfully selected furniture that supports function without compromising dignity. Large windows, high ceilings and nature-inspired finishes create a calming environment, while flexible activity zones and inclusive design elements welcome clients of all ages. Since opening, the updated space has helped FSGC treat more children outside of hospital settings and enhance staff satisfaction, setting a new standard for compassionate mental health facility design.
